"Triple Outlaw Elvis" Art Print by Rob Ozborne.
THE STORY: Andy Warhol produced a number of paintings of Elvis Presley. Back in 1963, the pop artist generated a twenty-two piece exhibition called "Elvis" for the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. A few years ago, one of those paintings came up for auction. Warhol's "Triple Elvis (Ferus Type)" painting sold for a whopping 81.9 million dollars.
The image that Warhol used in that painting came from a publicity photo from the 1960’s film "Flaming Star". In the photo, Elvis Presley is dressed as a cowboy with his gun drawn.
So, Warhol swiped an image to use in his work. In the image, Elvis wore borrowed clothes and brandished a prop pistol.
Now, I've been inspired to borrow from Warhol. Make something old and something new.
It's quite the conundrum. Or is it a wormhole? Perhaps, it's neither. It's something else now. It's art and history and fame and fortune. It's layers. This is getting absurd.
It's Triple Outlaw Elvis.
