THE STORY: Born into slavery, Harriet Tubman escaped to Philadelphia in 1849. She undertook numerous missions to rescue enslaved family and friends, and utilized a network of anti-slavery sympathizers and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. Her courage in the fight to abolish slavery included scouting and spying for the US Army during the Civil War.

Harriet Tubman is an American hero for her efforts as an abolitionist and humanitarian.
